Commission on Chicago Landmarks

The Commission on Chicago Landmarks (CCL) is dedicated to preserving the rich architectural and cultural heritage of Chicago. By recommending buildings, sites, objects, and districts for landmark status, the CCL ensures that these historically significant places are legally protected and remain a vibrant part of the city’s landscape.

Supported by the Historic Preservation Division of the Department of Planning and Development (DPD), the commission plays a vital role in evaluating proposed changes to landmarks and assessing the significance of structures facing possible demolition. With a strong commitment to heritage, the nine-member commission, appointed by the mayor and approved by City Council, helps shape Chicago’s future while honoring its past.

Regular meetings, held on the first Thursday of each month at 12:45 p.m., provide an open forum for community involvement, transparency, and celebration of Chicago’s unique architectural legacy.
